How is the day structured?
What do I do when I'm not racing?
Each participant is asked to go into the field and marshal for the other competitors (as they did for you). This means watching cars knock over cones, watching cars going "off course" and mostly it means chatting with other marshals about how everyone is doing and how to improve your time.
How many runs do I get?
It depends on a few things, not the least of which is how many people show up. On average... 6 (with a couple of 8 run days thrown in for good measure.)
How many drivers can use the same car?
We've seen three. Although there is no actual limit, it does weigh on the drivers to be co-ordinated enough to not miss their runs. Seems simple enough and if you are on the ball.... it is.
How old do you have to be?
You have to be at least 16 (with at least a GDL, no Learner's Permits) and have a parent's signature. If you are between 18 and 130 years old, you do not need a parent's signature. You still need at least a GDL.
What kind of safety equipment do I need?
Required Equipment: Snell 2000-2005-2010 both M and SA helmets are valid this year. If you can't aquire your own helmet, there is almost always someone willing to share theirs. WARNING: other peoples helmets get REALLY REALLY sweaty.
What kind of modifications do I have to make to my car?
None, but if you DO start to change things, winter tires with an aggressive tread are a good start.
What shape does my car have to be in?
It must be able to pass a basic safety inspection (no flapping or missing bodywork. Decent tires, brakes, steering, seatbelts and seats. Strapped down battery, etc. )
How much does it cost?
$40 for members of ERC or other WCMA or CARS clubs.
or $50 for non-members
What kind of classes are the cars and drivers in?
There are 4 classes. 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive for unmodified cars (newer drivers will probably go here), and 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive for modified cars, people who win too many times in the stock category and people with big mouths.
How close do the cars get on the track?
They don't. This is single lane, single car racing. There may be as many as three cars on the track but they are spaced far enough apart they should never meet. If you find yourself in a position where you are anywhere near another vehicle (maybe you were WAY fast and caught the car in front of you >rare< or the car in front of you broke down >possible<) you STOP RACING ...and you get a do over.
Does my car have to be registered and insured?
No. Stick it on a trailer and bring it out.
Can I race my truck / Jeep / SUV / Ford Raptor / street sweeper / tracker / dune buggy / quad / motorcycle / etc.?
No.
